Community Support Worker - Wellbeing Coach Youth Mental Health
Job Description
This is a fantastic opportunity for recent graduates in Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Social Work or Outdoor Recreation looking to start their career in youth mental health, as well as experienced support workers who want to make a real difference. You’ll join a passionate team, receive ongoing training, and work in a role that provides practical support to empower young people and their whānau.
About the role
The Community Support Worker component of this role involves working across Youth Justice and Mental Health Services. Key aspects include facilitating individuals and groups of young people to engage across a range of life skills and experiential learning activities to improve well-being.
Mental Health Support Work
Providing community-based support (social, educational, cultural and physical activities) in accordance with their clinical plan goals
Facilitating smooth transitions for young people from one health service to another, or transition to whānau-supported independence
Working with clinical staff (ADL or Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) to identify the needs of each young person and monitor progress
Working with young people’s whānau to keep their young people safe and healthy
Working with young people and their families/whānau/caregivers to increase access to resources within their local communities
Facilitating young people to participate in a range of both group and individual activities of interest
Supported Bail/ Supervision with Activity
Supporting young people to remain in the community rather than experience a custodial remand/sentence
Developing a working relationship with the young person and their family/whānau/caregivers. This includes developing an Individual Plan for the young person and their whānau in collaboration with the Oranga Tamariki and assisting the young person with their motivation and adherence to that plan
Availability to work the occasional Saturdays and early starts (7am)/ later finishes (7pm)
The Wellbeing Coach component involves working alongside ADL’s clinical staff to enhance the psychological wellbeing of young people aged 12 to 24 years. The hands on role is focused on:
Supporting young people and whānau waiting for the Thrive Te Pae Ora Service or transitioning into other internal or external services
Navigatingyoung people to appropriate community or other support, which would include online and digital resources
Directly support young people with mild needs and their whānau, and provide follow-up check-ins for the young person and/or their whānau via phone or telehealth.
Working alongside clinicians with young people with moderate needs and their whānau

Skills and experience
We are looking for someone who is passionate about supporting young people and committed to making a positive difference in their lives. To be successful in this role, you will bring:
+ A relevant qualification, with a Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 4) or equivalent as a minimum requirement. A tertiary qualification in Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Outdoor Recreation, or a related field would be advantageous.
+ We welcome applications from new graduates who are enthusiastic about beginning their career in youth wellbeing and support services.
+ Experience working with young people, or a demonstrated ability to build positive and effective relationships with rangatahi.
+ A sound understanding of mental health, wellbeing, and recovery-focused approaches.
+ Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with young people, whānau, colleagues and community partners.
+ Knowledge of, or a commitment to developing, Kaupapa Māori understanding and practice.
+ A willingness to actively participate in physical, recreational and outdoor activities alongside young people.
+ A current full New Zealand driver's licence.
