At the Christchurch City Council, our love for our city inspires us as we constantly strive to make it an even a better place to live, work, and play.

Do you have a sharp eye for detail, the ability to multi-task across a variety of activities, and the flexibility to meet shifting deadlines — all while being a strong team player? If so, we’d love you to join our Democratic Services team.

About the role | Ko te mahi nei

As a Democratic Support Services Officer, you’ll play a key role in delivering professional secretarial support to the Council and its committees. No two days are the same — one moment you’ll be supporting a formal Council meeting, and the next you’ll be preparing public facing documents or processing District Licensing Committee decisions.

This role suits someone who is highly organised, adaptable, and confident learning new systems and technology. You’ll balance daily workflows with reactive tasks, so the ability to think on your feet and remain composed under pressure is essential. If you enjoy variety, responsibility, and being part of a supportive team, this is the role for you.

About you | Ko Koe Tēnei

Attentive yet calm and collected under pressure and have a professional manner as you support livestreamed formal Council meetings by typing live on screen, displaying documents and running the meeting technology.

Ability to multitask whist maintaining a high level of attention to detail is a must as you will also be processing and reviewing District Licensing Committee decisions and dealing with a wide range of public facing documents.

Highly organised, task oriented, a quick learner and able to produce consistently high standards of work within tight legislative timeframes without being fazed.

Excellent communication skills as you deal with multiple internal and external stakeholders including Commissioners, Elected Members and Senior staff.

Enthusiastic and energetic self-starter with strong experience in secretarial administration. You will be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality. New Zealand Local Government experience would be highly desirable but not necessary.

What's in it for you? He aha ngā hua ki a koe?

This is an opportunity to shape a developing area of work with real citywide impact. You will work with committed colleagues and partners, help communities build their own strengths, and improve how Christchurch prepares for and manages recovery over the long term.

Want to be involved in shaping your City? Here at the Council we know our strength comes from our people, working together as one team to create results. When you join us, you're getting involved first hand, and contributing to crafting the Christchurch community. You will also benefit from:

Access to training programmes, workshops, and development opportunities

Flexible working arrangements - WFH, adjustable start and finish times, option to purchase extra leave.

Collaboration - exposure to wider areas of the organisation

Benefits - a variety of benefits for Council staff from health schemes to retail discounts.

If this sounds like an interesting opportunity, you think you have what it takes and want to get involved in shaping our City then please apply today.
