Environmental Forester

About the role

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Environmental Forester plans and manages environmental maintenance and earthworks to minimise risk, meet environmental requirements and support the timely handback of harvested areas. This is a varied role that combines planning, field monitoring, contractor coordination, compliance and practical problem-solving.

What you will do

• Identify environmentally sensitive areas, determine required actions and schedule maintenance work.
• Monitor sites, document findings and confirm completed works meet environmental requirements.
• Coordinate contractors, operators, machinery and materials so work is completed safely and on time.
• Provide clear prescriptions, maps and supporting information to operators.
• Monitor contractor performance and compliance with environmental and health and safety requirements.
• Support the handback process between Harvesting and Tree Crop teams.
• Provide environmental advice and contribute to environmental projects and compliance monitoring.
• Complete TM61 and slash pullback calculations, and support culvert maintenance and fish passage restoration.
• Verify contractor claims, process invoices and assist with month-end activities.

About you

You will bring a relevant tertiary qualification and knowledge of environmental planning, resource management, forest management or forest operations. Experience in a similar role would be an advantage.

To succeed in this role, you will have

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Familiarity with resource consent processes and the National Environmental Standards for Commercial Forestry.
• GIS capability and confidence working with maps and field information.
• The ability to plan, prioritise and work independently while contributing to a wider team.
• Strong relationship-building skills and the confidence to work effectively with contractors and stakeholders.
• A practical approach, sound judgement and a commitment to safe and environmentally responsible work.
