Health Safety Assistant
Job Description
Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the Health & Safety Coordinator will support the Jealous Fruits team in their pursuit to be incident free. This role will work closely with the Operations & Farm Managers to ensure compliance, training reviews and documentation.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support Health, Safety efforts, and program development and maintenance.
- Maintain programs which will ensure compliance with objectives and policy, as well as government rules and regulations pertaining to Occupational Health, Safety (WSBC)
- Maintain knowledge and understanding of all provincial and federal Health, Safety laws and regulations pertaining to the plant an agriculture.
- Maintain accurate records with regards to safety incidents, injuries, and corporate reporting and ensure activities are handled in a timely manner.
- Support Joint Health and Safety Team to develop and maintain internal audit system including corrective actions and tracking system. Assist with onsite inspections for hazards, site operations, general site conditions & activities, signage, and personnel to ensure safety standards are maintained.
- Assist with developing, revising, and updating all Health, Safety policies and procedures and training on procedures for evacuation / fire drills etc.
- Coordinate and oversee training of all required training, tracking of training, hearing program, first aid program with support from the Operations and HR teams.
- Support compliance with Early Safe Return to Work (ESRTW) policy (work with Farm Teams/HR to develop) and work with the support of the HR team with WorkSafe BC claims/records.
- Support accident /incident investigation and initiate proper corrective actions.
- Support Health & Safety Training Programs
- Maintain the health, safety & environmental bulletin boards/communication to front line workers.
Qualifications
- Diploma or certificate in Health and Safety or working towards NCSO Designation an asset.
- Great organizational, problem-solving and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Possess a sound knowledge of health and safety standards and a commitment to promoting safe farming practices.
- Ability to work long hours especially during the harvest months of July and August.
- Ability to speak Spanish an asset.
- Working knowledge of Excel and Word.
- Class 5 driver’s license.
Working conditions
Our working environment is extremely challenging over a short period of time. Applicants should be aware that this is a farming environment and days off may be limited during our growing and packing season. Applicants should be aware that:
- Work hours are not calendar based but are dependent on crop maturity and weather.
- Work hours are generally at 50+ hours per week during harvest season.
- The candidate must have the ability to work well with people of varying backgrounds and nationalities.
- Applicants must be available from mid-April until early September.
