Job Description

This is primarily a hands-on mechanical service and maintenance position working on industrial steam, hot water, biomass and associated pressure equipment. Approximately 80% of the position involves practical, hands-on mechanical maintenance, servicing, fault finding, repair, design and installation work.

The successful applicant will work independently and as part of our service team at customer sites throughout the North Island, with occasional work in other parts of New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

The position includes participation in our rotating after-hours and weekend call-out roster and requires regular overnight travel away from Hamilton.

Key duties and responsibilities

The role includes

  • Carrying out servicing, maintenance and repair of industrial steam and hot-water boilers and associated pressure equipment.
  • Assisting with statutory boiler inspections and completing associated maintenance requirements.
  • Diagnosing mechanical and operational faults on industrial gas, electric and biomass boiler plant, and associated equipment.
  • Stripping, inspecting, repairing and reassembling pumps, valves, gas and diesel burners and other mechanical equipment.
  • Servicing and maintaining steam, condensate, feedwater and hot-water systems and gas systems.
  • Installing and commissioning new boilers, burners and associated mechanical plant.
  • Investigating equipment failures and identifying practical engineering solutions.
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, technical manuals and equipment documentation.
  • Completing accurate service reports, maintenance records and compliance documentation.
  • Working safely within industrial environments, including confined spaces and working at heights where required.
  • Communicating directly with customers regarding plant condition, faults, repairs and maintenance requirements.
  • Assisting with and mentoring less-experienced members of the service team.
  • Minimum requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements

  • A recognised Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering qualification.
  • A minimum of 5 years' relevant work experience in industrial mechanical maintenance, marine engineering, boiler servicing, pressure equipment, process plant or a closely related heavy industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience dismantling, inspecting, repairing and reassembling mechanical equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience diagnosing and fault-finding mechanical plant and equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, equipment manuals and technical documentation.
  • Ability to work independently at customer sites and make practical technical decisions within the applicant's level of competency.
  • Good written and verbal English communication skills sufficient to communicate with customers and prepare clear technical service reports.
  • A current driver's licence, or the ability to obtain a New Zealand driver's licence.
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout New Zealand and occasionally overseas.
  • Ability and willingness to participate in an after-hours and weekend call-out roster.
  • Ability to undertake the physical requirements of industrial boiler maintenance, including working at heights and in confined spaces where required.
  • Preferred experience
  • Experience in the following areas would be advantageous but is not essential:
  • Industrial steam or hot-water boilers.
  • Biomass boiler systems.
  • Industrial burners and combustion equipment.
  • Steam and condensate systems.
  • Pressure vessels and heat exchangers.
  • Gas systems
  • Boiler commissioning.
  • PLC, burner management or industrial control systems.
  • Marine engineering.

  • $35.00–$40.00 per hour, depending on skills and experience.
  • Minimum 32 guaranteed hours per week.
