Job Description

Hands-on maintenance role | Production & site maintenance | Seasonal shift flexibility

Auckland Pack & Cool Ltd (APAC) is looking for an experienced Maintenance Technician / Coordinator to join our post-harvest operation in South Auckland.

We need someone who is practical, technically capable and comfortable being hands-on.

This is not primarily a management role. We are looking for someone who can diagnose faults, repair equipment, carry out preventative maintenance and keep production moving safely — while also being organised enough to plan work, maintain accurate records and coordinate contractors where required.

During the peak kiwifruit season, APAC operates extended day and night shifts. Depending on the successful applicant’s experience, availability and the final maintenance roster, this role may work predominantly day shift, become the designated night-shift maintenance person, or provide cover across both shifts. Some weekend work and seasonal flexibility will be required.

What you'll be doing

You will work across our packhouse, coolstore and wider site, providing practical maintenance and technical support.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Fault-finding and repairing production machinery and equipment.
  • Responding to breakdowns safely and efficiently.
  • Planned and preventative maintenance.
  • Machinery inspections and identifying developing faults before they result in downtime.
  • Supporting production start-up, shutdown, changeovers and seasonal preparation.
  • Maintenance of conveyors, motors, gearboxes, bearings, drives, sensors, switches, pneumatics, hoists, bin-handling equipment, box-making and stacking equipment.
  • Recording breakdowns, repairs and completed maintenance work.
  • Keeping maintenance schedules, service records and outstanding-work lists up to date.
  • Providing clear maintenance handovers between shifts.
  • Identifying recurring faults and helping implement permanent solutions.
  • Assisting with machinery upgrades, modifications and installations.
  • Maintaining critical spare-parts and maintenance consumable requirements.
  • Supporting machinery isolation and lock-out/tag-out procedures.
  • Coordinating specialist contractors where work falls outside internal capability.
  • Supporting general building and site maintenance where appropriate.
  • Assisting with doors, gates, barriers, fixtures, minor building repairs, workshop areas, yard maintenance, drainage checks and general site upkeep.
  • Supporting continuous improvement across plant reliability, safety and maintainability.
  • Where registered electrical, refrigeration, plumbing or other specialist work is required, this will be referred to appropriately qualified contractors.
  • About you
  • We are looking for someone who can do the job, not just manage it.

Ideally, you will have

  • A recognised mechanical, engineering, electrical or relevant maintenance trade qualification, or strong equivalent industrial maintenance experience.
  • Hands-on maintenance experience in manufacturing, food processing, horticulture, post-harvest or another production environment.
  • Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Experience with conveyors, motors, gearboxes, bearings, drives, sensors and pneumatic systems.
  • Preventative and planned-maintenance experience.
  • A good understanding of machinery guarding, isolation and lock-out requirements.
  • The ability to work independently and make sensible decisions during breakdowns.
  • Good organisation and planning skills.
  • Confidence using a computer to keep maintenance records, schedules and work lists current.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to provide clear shift handovers.
  • A strong health and safety focus.
  • A full New Zealand driver's licence.
  • The legal right to work in New Zealand.
  • Experience in kiwifruit, packhouse, food manufacturing, horticulture or other high-volume production environments would be an advantage.
  • Experience with PLC-controlled machinery, variable-speed drives or automation would also be useful.
  • The person we're looking for

You will be someone who

enjoys fault-finding and fixing equipment;

takes ownership of problems;

stays calm when production is under pressure;

follows jobs through to completion;

understands the difference between a temporary repair and a permanent solution;

values preventative maintenance;

keeps tools, work areas and records organised;

communicates well with production staff and supervisors;

knows when specialist assistance is required; and

is willing to support general site and building maintenance when needed.

Hours

This is a permanent full-time maintenance role. During peak season, the maintenance team provides coverage across both day and night shifts. The successful applicant may be rostered as the primary night-shift maintenance person or provide day/night cover depending on the final team structure.

Outside peak production periods, the focus will include preventative maintenance, planned servicing, building and site maintenance, machinery improvements, projects and preparation for the following season.

Why join APAC?

This is an opportunity to take ownership of practical maintenance across a busy post-harvest operation and have a visible impact on plant reliability and site performance.

You'll work across a wide range of equipment and have the opportunity to help improve our preventative-maintenance systems, documentation and equipment reliability.

Remuneration will be negotiated based on qualifications, technical capability and relevant experience.

If you're a capable maintenance professional who enjoys solving practical problems and keeping a production operation running, we'd like to hear from you.
