Job Description

Marketing Manager โ€“ Brand, Creative & Growth

Matthews Packaging & Hygiene

๐Ÿ“ Auckland | Full-time | B2B / Distribution

Help us build the next generation of the Matthews brand

Matthews Packaging & Hygiene is a proudly New Zealand family-owned business supplying an extensive range of packaging, hygiene and workplace consumables to businesses throughout New Zealand.

As we continue to grow, we're looking for an experienced and highly capable Marketing Manager to take ownership of the Matthews brand and lead our marketing function.

This is not a purely strategic management position. We are looking for someone who combines strong commercial marketing capability with excellent creative and graphic design skills โ€“ someone who can develop the strategy, generate the ideas and also get hands-on to bring those ideas to life.

You'll work closely with the Managing Director, sales leadership and our internal marketing and design resources to continually improve how Matthews presents itself to the market.

What You'll Be Responsible For

You will take ownership of the overall Matthews marketing strategy, brand direction and creative output, with a strong focus on supporting the continued growth of the business.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Developing and executing the overall Matthews marketing strategy
  • Taking ownership of the Matthews brand identity and visual direction
  • Producing and overseeing high-quality graphic design and creative work
  • Developing advertising campaigns, promotions and product launches
  • Designing and directing catalogues, brochures, product flyers, presentations, signage, vehicle graphics, packaging and other marketing collateral
  • Developing creative concepts for new products, brands and campaigns
  • Maintaining strong brand consistency across every customer touchpoint
  • Leading the creative direction of product photography and imagery
  • Managing website design, content and ongoing improvements
  • Developing digital marketing campaigns across Google, email, social media and other relevant channels
  • Improving SEO, online product presentation and digital customer experience
  • Developing targeted email marketing and customer communication programmes
  • Working closely with our sales team to create effective sales tools and campaigns
  • Developing marketing strategies for specific industries, customer groups and product categories
  • Analysing customer behaviour, campaign results and marketing ROI
  • Using data to identify opportunities and continually improve marketing performance
  • Managing trade shows, customer events, sponsorships and promotional activities
  • Managing external agencies, printers, photographers and other creative suppliers
  • Managing the marketing budget
  • Leading and developing members of the internal marketing team
  • Bringing new ideas to Matthews and continually looking for ways to make our brand stronger, more recognisable and more professional

Strong Graphic Design Capability Is Important

Unlike many Marketing Manager positions, strong graphic design and creative capability will be an important part of this role.

We want someone with an excellent eye for design who understands typography, colour, layout, imagery and brand consistency โ€“ and who is capable of personally producing professional creative work when required.

You should be confident using tools such as:

  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe InDesign
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Canva or similar rapid-content tools
  • Website/CMS platforms
  • Experience with photography, video editing, motion graphics or other creative software would be an additional advantage.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating previous design, branding and campaign work will be highly regarded.

We're Looking for Someone With

  • Proven experience in a Marketing Manager, Brand Manager, Creative Marketing Manager or Senior Marketing role
  • Excellent graphic design and visual communication skills
  • A strong creative portfolio
  • Strong understanding of branding and brand development
  • Excellent Adobe Creative Suite capability
  • Strong digital marketing knowledge
  • Experience with websites, SEO, Google Ads, email marketing and social media
  • Experience developing and executing marketing campaigns from concept through to completion
  • Strong copywriting and communication skills
  • Experience marketing products rather than purely services would be advantageous
  • Strong commercial awareness and an understanding of how marketing supports sales and revenue growth
  • Confidence analysing marketing performance and ROI
  • Strong project-management and organisational capability
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Confidence working directly with senior management
  • Experience leading or coordinating other marketing and creative staff
  • Experience within B2B, distribution, wholesale, industrial, manufacturing, FMCG or a product-focused business would be particularly valuable.
  • Experience with NetSuite, CRM systems, e-commerce platforms, marketing automation and reporting tools would also be advantageous.

The Person We're Looking For

We're looking for someone with a rare combination of creative ability, commercial thinking and execution.

You may be the person who comes up with the campaign concept in the morning, develops the creative direction with the design team, discusses a customer opportunity with Sales, reviews website performance and then presents a new brand initiative to management.

You'll be someone who

  • Has exceptionally high standards for presentation and design
  • Notices the details others miss
  • Is creative but also commercially minded
  • Understands that great marketing needs to generate business results
  • Is proactive and brings ideas rather than waiting for instructions
  • Can turn an idea into a finished result
  • Is comfortable challenging existing thinking
  • Takes ownership and follows projects through to completion
  • Enjoys working at pace
  • Wants to build something rather than simply maintain it
  • Why Join Matthews?

This is an opportunity to take a significant role in shaping the future of an established New Zealand business and brand.

You'll have the opportunity to influence everything from our overall brand direction and digital presence through to product launches, advertising, customer communications and the way Matthews presents itself throughout New Zealand.

We offer

  • Genuine ownership of the Matthews marketing function
  • Direct involvement with the Managing Director and leadership team
  • Significant creative freedom and influence
  • An existing internal marketing and creative team
  • The opportunity to shape and develop the Matthews brand
  • A broad role rather than a narrow corporate marketing position
  • The ability to see your ideas implemented quickly
  • A growing business with ambitious plans for the future
  • Competitive remuneration based on experience
  • Interested?

If you're an experienced marketer who combines strong commercial marketing capability with exceptional creative and graphic design skills, we'd like to hear from you.

Please apply through SEEK with your CV, cover letter and examples or a portfolio of your previous creative work.

We'd particularly like to see examples of branding, graphic design, campaigns, product marketing or other projects where you personally played a significant role.
