Senior Applications Specialist
Job Description
He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role
We are seeking a Senior Applications Specialist to take technical ownership of core clinical and business applications across RHCNZ. Reporting to the Business Applications Team Lead, you will keep mission-critical systems stable, secure and well configured, provide responsive support directly to radiologists and other end users, lead controlled change, and continuously improve performance, reliability, usability and supportability.
This is a permanent, full-time role.
What the role looks like day to day
This senior hands-on role aligns primarily with SFIA Level 5 capabilities in Application Support, System Software Administration, Incident Management and Problem Management, together with SFIA Level 4 capabilities in Change Control and Release Management. Day to day, you will:
Support radiologists and other end users — respond directly to application issues and workflow questions, provide clear guidance, and work with users to understand impacts and restore effective clinical workflows.
Own and optimise applications — monitor health and performance, manage configuration and integrations, troubleshoot complex faults, and improve security, recovery, documentation and support processes.
Lead incident and problem resolution — coordinate the response to significant incidents, restore service, communicate clearly, investigate root causes and deliver permanent fixes.
Deliver safe change and releases — assess risk, plan and implement approved changes, patches and upgrades, validate outcomes and improve delivery through post-release reviews.
Drive continuous improvement — analyse trends, simplify workflows, tune configuration, strengthen monitoring and automate repeatable work to achieve measurable gains in reliability, usability and support efficiency.
Manage operational demand — prioritise incident, problem, change and request queues according to impact, urgency and clinical risk, while keeping stakeholders informed.
What success looks like
Fewer repeat incidents, stronger application performance and resilience, well-supported clinical workflows, more effective operational documentation, and measurable improvements in support efficiency.
After-hours and on-call
As part of RHCNZ’s Business Applications team, this role may be required to participate in a shared 24/7 on-call roster and undertake approved after-hours work for urgent incidents, planned releases, upgrades or other operational requirements. When rostered on-call, you must remain contactable, respond promptly, be able to troubleshoot and remedy faults remotely, and attend the workplace within the policy response timeframe if required. Rostered on-call duties and approved overtime are compensated in accordance with RHCNZ’s IT Overtime and On-Call Policy.
Location and working arrangement
This role may be based in Christchurch or Tauranga and is primarily office-based, enabling you to provide responsive support to radiologists and other users and collaborate closely with team members. Limited flexibility to work remotely may be available by agreement with the Business Applications Team Lead, particularly where focused time would support key activities.
Ngā pūkenga e rapu nei mātou | About you
Experience in healthcare or radiology applications such as Comrad RIS, Intelerad, Kailo or PowerScribe would be beneficial, but it is not essential. We also welcome experienced application professionals from other sectors who can bring strong transferable skills aligned with the SFIA capabilities outlined above.
At least five years’ experience in application operations or support, including mission-critical systems and structured IT service management environments.
Strong practical experience across incident, problem, change and release management, with confidence leading complex technical work.
Capability in application configuration, integrations, performance troubleshooting, security, upgrades, backups and disaster recovery.
A service-focused approach and the ability to support radiologists and other end users directly, communicate clearly under pressure, understand workflow impacts, and build trusted relationships across clinical, operational and IT teams.
A bachelor’s degree in information systems or a related discipline, or equivalent experience. ITIL and relevant application or platform certifications are desirable.
You will also connect with our values: patients are our why, our team is our greatest strength, manaaki is at our core, and excellence is our ambition.
