The post holder will report to the Speech and Language Therapy Manager.

**Details of Service**

Mercy University Hospital is a public voluntary hospital. It provides a comprehensive range of services consistent with its status as a Model 3 hospital providing 24/7 acute surgery, acute medical and critical care.

The Speech and Language Therapy Department provides a service to all patients presenting with communication and feeding, eating, drinking and swallowing (FEDS) difficulties in the acute setting. A videofluoroscopy service is also provided.

**Responsibilities Include:**

• Provide assessment, planning, implementation and review of interventions for all patients referred to the service with communication and feeding, eating, drinking and swallowing (FEDS) difficulties.
• Document all assessment, diagnosis, treatment/intervention plans, clinical notes, relevant contacts and summaries in accordance with departmental and professional standards.
• Manage own caseload in accordance with the needs of the post.
• Seek advice and assistance from Senior colleagues/Speech and Language Therapist Manager with any assigned cases or issues that prove beyond the scope of his/her professional competence in line with principles of best practice and clinical governance.
• Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with members of the multi disciplinary team.
• Participate in mandatory and recommended training programmes in accordance with departmental/organisational guidelines.
• Avail of and participate in own supervision with Speech & Language Therapist Manager.
• Comply with the policies, procedures and safe professional practice of the Irish Healthcare System by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations and standards.
• Responsible for the co-ordination and delivery of service in designated area(s).
• Ensure good working practice and adherence to standards of best practice.
• Promote quality by reviewing and evaluating the Speech & Language Therapy service, identifying changing needs and opportunities to improve services.
• Participate in the control and ordering of clinical equipment.
• Engage in technological developments as they apply to the service user and service administration.
• Keep up to date with change and developments within the Irish Health Service.

**Eligibility Criteria:**

• Be registered or be eligible for registration as a Speech and Language Therapist by the Speech and Language Therapists Registration Board at CORU.
• Provide proof of Statutory Registration on the Speech and Language Therapist Register maintained by the Speech and Language Therapist Registration Board at CORU before a contract of employment can be issued.
• Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
• **Essential -** Speech and Language Therapists who work with feeding, eating, drinking swallowing difficulties must hold a ***Dysphagia Qualification*** or equivalent as outlined in '*Standards of Practice for Speech and Language Therapists on the Management of Feeding, Eating, Drinking and Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia)',* Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists (IASLT) 2007. Recent working or clinical placement experience with adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders is essential.
