Civil Superintendent (Substation Construction)

Our Substations group is currently looking to add a Civil Superintendent to our growing team, based in Onslow, NS.Reporting to the Site Superintendent, the Civil Superintendent leads all heavy civil earthworks and site development scope on an active electrical infrastructure construction project. This role owns the day-to-day execution of grading, haul road construction, subgrade preparation, and underground utility installation, directing crews and equipment to keep the civil work front on schedule and ahead of the trades that follow it.Please Note: this is a field-based position working a shift of 10 hours a day.  We are open to local candidates working 6 days on / 1 day off, or a Fly In / Fly Out arrangement from Eastern Canada working a shift of 14 days on / 7 days off with LOA and/or accommodations provided.  Duties and ResponsibilitiesOversee civil operations through task delegation and productivity monitoring, ensuring team efficiency in project completionSupervise and coordinate subcontractor crews on-site, ensuring work is performed safely, on schedule, and in accordance with project specifications and quality standards  Manage and coordinate daily heavy civil construction activities, organizing job tasks to be completed in a productive, safe, and efficient manner in accordance with all company safety policiesInterpret engineering drawings and designs to implement construction plans, ensuring all work is completed within project scopeAdminister and enforce the project's QA/QC program across all civil work, confirming critical earthworks and grading activities are correctly performedDirect new haul road construction, subgrade preparation for concrete foundations and equipment pads, and ground preparation for crane padsOversee final grade development and excavation for underground utilities and water lines, including culvert installation and all general earthworks associated with new site constructionOrganize contractor daily tasks with manpower and resource loading, planning work scope sequencing across multiple concurrent work frontsUtilize manpower and equipment to full capacity across multiple simultaneous project activitiesMonitor progress against schedule and budget, maintaining daily communication with project leadership on risks and schedule impactsMaintain accurate site records including daily logs, productivity tracking, and QA/QC documentationRequirements7 years of experience in a similar Civil Superintendent or Civil Construction Supervisor role on large-scale heavy civil or earthworks projectsDemonstrated experience supervising crews of 20+ across earthworks, grading, and underground utility installationExperience with foundation works and a solid understanding of concrete/rebar standards and best practicesProven ability to interpret engineered drawings and blueprints and translate them into field executionExperience with subgrade preparation, final grade development, excavation, and culvert/utility installationWorking knowledge of QA/QC program administration for civil and earthworks scopeValid driver's licensePreferred Skills / QualificationsExperience with large-scale site development or grading projects involving engineered material placement (granular and rock-based fill)Post-Secondary education in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or related fieldBenefitsWe offer a comprehensive and competitive total rewards package that incorporates a complete range of employee benefits, including a 5% RRSP matching program, to ensure you have the tools necessary to manage, maintain, and improve your health and wellbeing.  About our BusinessValard Construction is Canada’s premier utility contractor providing comprehensive EPC+ (engineering, procurement, construction) and maintenance services to utilities, independent power producers, mining, oil and gas industries and rural electric associations.
