This is a rare and exciting opportunity for an experienced Commercial Manager with construction experienced to join our Civil business in Central Auckland.

Working closely with the Project Director, you'll provide commercial leadership across a major project valued around the vicinity of ($350m) while also supporting the wider civil project portfolio. This is a key leadership role where you’ll drive the commercial performance by creating a good commercial framework across the project, align budgets with delivery, manage risk, and lead the finance function ensuring robust governance with financial control throughout the project lifecycle.

You'll be a commercially astute individual who can provide trusted advice to senior leaders, manage client and subcontractor relationships to achieve successful project outcomes.

If you’ve worked on mid to large-size civil projects and know how to build and maintain strong relationships while maintaining a strong focus on commercial discipline , risk management and value creation this could be a great fit.

Key role responsibilities

Financial Management & Governance: Own project financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, reporting cashflow and working capital management. With Project Controls  monitor costs, identify trends and implement any corrective requirements. . Prepare accurate and timely financial reporting, forecasts and governance to meet company requirements. Support and mentor the finance team to meet timeframes for financial management and reporting.

Contract Management: Lead the management of  contracts with suppliers, and subcontractors. Oversee procurement, subcontract administration, variations, claims and dispute processes to ensure compliance, while engaging with and coordinating with legal and project teams on issues.

Risk Management: Identify, assess and manage commercial, contractual and financial risks. Develop risk mitigation and management strategies to ensure the risks are actively monitored and reported against.

Project Coordination: Collaborate with zone managers, engineers, HSQE and other stakeholders for effective communication and project progress.

Client Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and key stakeholders. Support the Project Director in managing client expectations and resolving commercial issues. Promote effective collaboration across the project with all internal functions.

We’re looking for someone with

  • A recognised qualification in Accounting or Quantity Surveying, with a CA/CPA.
  • Significant commercial management experience in the construction industry, minimum 10+ years.
  • Demonstrated success leading commercial functions on large civil engineering projects or proven ability leading commercial portfolios of over $50M.
  • Strong knowledge of construction contracts including NZS3910 and associated contractual frameworks.
  • Proven experience with project management and financial reporting systems, ideally CCS and JDE.
  • Sound commercial and financial acumen, with the ability to turn complex information into clear insights and decisions.
  • The ability to lead a team, with a strong team-focus and the ability to coach, guide, develop and lead effectively.
