Job Description
*Data Science/DevOps Engineer | Sydney/Melbourne | $150–160/hour

Lead engineering for data science + AI at scale. AWS, team leadership, prototype-to-production. $150–160/day, 7.5h/hour, Nov start.
A high-impact engineering leadership role designing and delivering cloud-based data science and AI solutions. You'll lead a team of data engineers, ML specialists, and DevOps engineers, setting technical standards and moving prototypes into production at scale.
Reporting to a Delivery Lead, you'll partner with senior data scientists, government technology teams, and stakeholders to deliver operationally sound, maintainable, secure data science capabilities. This role is essential to moving the portfolio from prototype-heavy delivery to repeatable, reusable patterns.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Lead the design and delivery of engineering approaches for data science and AI solutions
- Guide a team of ML, DevOps, and Data Engineering specialists
- Design reusable cloud architecture patterns (AWS, approved government environments)
- Build pathways for prototypes and POCs to reach production-readiness
- Establish best practices for data pipelines, ML engineering, DevOps, monitoring
- Collaborate with senior data scientists, delivery leads, technology teams, and stakeholders
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Essential
- Demonstrated delivery of data science / ML solutions to AWS or cloud platforms
- Engineering leadership for complex data science or AI projects
- Experience designing and implementing prototype-to-production pathways
- Strong understanding of data engineering, ML engineering, DevOps, cloud architecture
- Ability to work collaboratively across technical and non-technical teams
Desirable
- Government or regulated-sector delivery background
- Familiarity with MLOps, LLMOps, retrieval-augmented generation, responsible AI
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, model monitoring and evaluation
- Track record of creating reusable reference architectures or technical documentation
THE DETAILS
- Rate: $150–160/hour inc. super
- Hours: 7.5 hours
- Location: Sydney or Melbourne (2 days on-site, 3 from home)
- Engagement: Labour hire contract, 12 months + 12-month extension possible
- Start Date: 2nd November 2026
- Security Clearance: Must be able to obtain NV1 (we support the process)
- Citizenship: Australian citizens only
