Be part of an exciting milestone for Asian mental health access.Asian Family Services (AFS) is growing our integrated primary mental health service across Auckland general practices. We’re seeking a part-time Health Coachto build clients’ knowledge, skills, and confidence to manage long‑term conditions and everyday wellbeing - with clear, accessible education that respects language and culture.
Why this role matters.This service will help improve how Asian communities engage with primary care - fast, practical support embedded in general practice, tailored to language and culture, and aligned with care pathways and group programmes. You’ll help remove barriers, build confidence, and connect people to the right help, first time.
Key responsibilities
Coach patients in behaviour‑change strategies (action planning, problem‑solving, building routines); support adherence to medications, appointments, and lifestyle plans.
Tailor communication for diverse Asian cultural norms; orient patients to NZ primary care and help navigate the system.
Collaborate with GPs, nurses, and HIPs; participate in huddles; co‑design pathways and group programmes for priority populations.
Maintain accurate notes and uphold privacy and professional standards; engage in supervision and ongoing training.
About You

A Level 4 or above health‑related qualification (e.g., Public Health, Nutrition/Dietetics, Sport Psychology, Allied Health, Health Promotion), with health coaching training (CEPC/Stanford SMRC) strongly advantageous.
Experience supporting patients in primary care or community-based health settings, with a solid understanding of behaviour change approaches and goal-setting, alongside experience in healthcare environments and a good understanding of primary health care, community health, and mental health or wellbeing support services.
Strong cultural responsiveness, including knowledge of Asian health beliefs, family dynamics, and communication styles, and commitment to culturally safe practice.
Excellent interpersonal skills, clear communication, and confidence working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams (GPs, nurses, HIPs, community providers).
* Bilingual ability (English + an Asian language), enabling effective health education, system navigation, and strengthened engagement for diverse Asian communities.

Asian Family Services (AFS) has been providing support to our Asian communities in New Zealand since 1998. We are a charitable trust and New Zealand's leading service provider for people of Asian backgrounds affected by mental health issues and gambling harm.
Our services are based in the community and span across a variety of settings: telehealth via our Asian Helpline is offered in 7 different languages; harm minimisation and prevention work through our public health team; school-based child and youth mental health and wellbeing programmes via our Kia Ora Ake team; general counselling services through our Asian Wellbeing Services; and gambling harm clinical intervention services.
On top of this, we are commissioned for several significant projects focused on our Asian communities ranging from suicide prevention, to researching the experience of those living with gambling harm, and much more!
