Job Description

Job Summary:

We're looking for an experienced and practical Health & Safety Advisor to join our Auckland team and support our people, projects and operations across New Zealand.

This is a hands-on role working closely with operational leaders, supervisors and frontline crews across crane hire, transport and a busy yard with a workshop and engineering & fabrication capabilities. You'll be out in the field supporting our high-risk activities on client projects, helping manage critical risks, strengthening safe work practices and contributing to continuous improvement across the business.

While based in Auckland, this role will involve supporting projects and operations throughout New Zealand and building strong relationships with teams across multiple business units.

About Us:

Smith Crane and Construction is a family-owned business with over 30 years of experience, offering exceptional service across crane hire, civil construction (including marine, civil and pre-cast manufacturing), transportation, and wind energy installation and maintenance. We pride ourselves on our strong team culture, commitment to safety, and continuing our family tradition of excellent customer focus and job execution.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Partnering with operational teams to identify, manage and improve critical risk controls across our crane, transport, construction and workshop operations.

Providing practical health and safety leadership, coaching and support to supervisors, managers and frontline workers.

Leading incident investigations and driving continuous improvement through effective corrective actions.

Developing clear, practical and fit-for-purpose safety documentation, risk assessments and project plans.

Supporting compliance with legislative, client and company requirements while ensuring solutions remain practical and workable.

Building strong relationships with employees, contractors and clients to achieve positive safety and operational outcomes.

Participating in site visits, inspections, audits and operational reviews across various projects and locations.

Supporting the development of a positive reporting culture where learning and improvement are encouraged.

What We’re Looking for:

Minimum 3 years' experience in a Health & Safety Advisor position

Previous experience within construction, infrastructure, heavy industry, or another high-risk environment

A relevant New Zealand Health & Safety qualification, level 4 or above (or actively working towards one)

Someone who likes being out in the field, understanding how the work is done, and helping teams work safely.

Strong knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015

Experience investigating incidents and implementing continuous improvement initiatives

Someone who can build good relationships with our teams, speak up when needed, and provide practical Health & Safety solutions.

A practical, solutions-focused approach to health and safety

Full New Zealand driver's licence

Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing

Why Join Us?

This is an opportunity to join a growing New Zealand business and work across a diverse range of crane, transport, construction, marine, manufacturing and renewable energy projects.

We're looking for a practical Health & Safety Advisor who enjoys being out in the field, working alongside operational teams and helping people manage risk effectively. This role is about building relationships, understanding how work is done, and supporting practical improvements that make a real difference.

You'll work closely with everyone from operators, drivers and supervisors through to project managers and senior leaders, providing coaching, advice and support across our operations nationwide.

As part of a small and engaged Health & Safety team, you'll have the opportunity to broaden your experience across multiple business units, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, and continue developing your professional skills in a complex and varied operational environment.

If you're someone who enjoys getting out from behind the desk, earning credibility with frontline teams and taking a practical approach to health and safety, we'd love to hear from you.
