Senior HSE Adviser

About the role
MJH Engineering is looking for an experienced HSE Adviser to take ownership of our established Health and Safety Management System and be the go-to person for safety across our workshop and project sites. This isn't a role where you're building a system from scratch — our HSMS is already set up and running. We need someone who can step in, keep it sharp, and bring strong investigation skills to the table when things go wrong.
Key responsibilities
Get out from behind the desk: a minimum of one day a week on project sites and a half day a week doing workshop walk-arounds
Lead investigations into incidents, accidents and near-misses — getting to root cause, not just the immediate cause, and following through on corrective actions
Manage WorkSafe notifications and liaison for notifiable events
Run inductions, keep SOPs current, and develop Site-Specific Safety Plans and Task Analyses for new jobs
Keep on top of staff qualifications, certifications and training currency
Run scheduled and unscheduled audits across sites and the workshop
Help scope out an environmental management component to sit alongside our existing HSMS
About you
H&S qualification (NZ Diploma or similar); NEBOSH Certificate (or working towards) would be an advantage
Solid experience leading or closely supporting incident investigations
Experience working within an established HSMS, ideally in construction or engineering
Full, current NZ driver's licence
Methodical, detail-focused approach, balanced with the people skills to coach supervisors and engage staff and contractors at every level
