Job Description

Duties include monitoring the health and well-being of a small herd of cows and calves on pasture and rangeland, assisting with the calving process, delivering calves when necessary, and caring for orphaned or weak calves. Workers will assist with routine cattle handling tasks such as tagging, vaccinating, castrating calves, and applying identification as instructed; administering treatment to sick or injured animals under the direction of the employer; and assisting with pregnancy checking of cows in the fall. Workers will provide daily livestock care including checking water tanks, stock ponds, and mineral feeders; distributing feed and supplements as directed; observing cattle for signs of illness, injury, or distress; and promptly reporting concerns to the employer. Ranch maintenance duties include repairing and maintaining fences, gates, corrals, chutes, and barns; clearing snow, mud, and debris from working areas; maintaining calving pens and bedding; and cleaning and preparing facilities for calving and winter conditions. Workers will operate and maintain ranch equipment and vehicles such as tractors, ATVs, pickup trucks, and livestock handling equipment for agricultural purposes only. Throughout the season, workers will ride or travel through pastures regularly to monitor livestock, move and rotate cattle as directed, gather and sort cows and calves for branding, weaning, and shipping, assist with loading livestock onto trucks for transport, and perform general upkeep of ranch facilities and surrounding work areas as needed. During the slow season, the employer will assume responsibility for reduced animal management needs and routine herd oversight. Workers should have 2 months of verifiable experience working with livestock.
