Job Description

Experienced Diesel or Marine Mechanic

Havelock Slipway – Havelock, Marlborough

Havelock Slipway is looking for an experienced Diesel or Marine Mechanic to join our friendly and practical team.

We are a long-established marine repair and refit facility working on recreational, commercial and working vessels. This is a varied, hands-on position suited to someone who enjoys diagnosing problems, machining or fabricating practical solutions and seeing each job through properly.

Previous marine experience would be valuable, but it is not essential for the right person. We welcome applications from experienced diesel, heavy-equipment, agricultural or industrial mechanics with broad practical skills and a genuine interest in developing their marine engineering knowledge.

The position offers plenty of variety. Some jobs will involve straightforward servicing and maintenance, while others will require careful fault-finding, machining or fabricating components, and developing a practical repair solution.

An experienced diesel mechanic should be able to transfer many existing skills into this position. Support will be available to help the successful applicant become familiar with marine-specific systems and working practices.

The work will include mostly mechanical, engineering, and light electrical work, however the right candidate should be willing to help out with other roles i.e. painting when workload dictates.

About you

We are looking for someone who:

Has sound practical experience with diesel engines and mechanical systems.

Has broad mechanical ability and can adapt existing skills to different equipment and situations.

Has stainless-steel welding and fabrication experience, or the practical aptitude and commitment to develop these skills.

Has a good eye for identifying potential problems before equipment fails.

Is a capable fault-finder who enjoys working through difficult or unusual problems.

Can work independently while also contributing positively to a small team.

Takes pride in completing work to a good standard.

Is reliable, safety-conscious and willing to pitch in where needed.

Has a practical, positive attitude and is keen to learn about marine engineering.

Experience with marine electrical systems—including batteries, charging systems, wiring, pumps, instruments and electrical fault-finding—would also be a significant advantage.

A diesel, marine or mechanical trade qualification would be welcomed, but strong practical experience, mechanical ability and the right attitude are equally important.

What we offer

Interesting and varied work across a wide range of vessels.

The opportunity for an experienced diesel mechanic to move into the marine industry.

Support in learning marine-specific systems and working practices.

A supportive, experienced and hardworking team.

Well-equipped engineering and boat-repair workshops.

Opportunities to expand your mechanical, machining, fabrication and electrical knowledge.

Remuneration based on experience and capability.
