ABOUT CUSTOM DENNING

Custom Denning is Australia's only locally based, fully electric bus manufacturer and a proud pioneer in sustainable public transport.

From our Sydney manufacturing facility, we design and build purpose-built electric buses for government fleets, public transport operators and commercial clients across Australia. Combining cutting-edge electric vehicle technology with skilled local manufacturing, we deliver zero-emission transport solutions that meet the highest standards of safety, quality, performance and reliability.

At Custom Denning, quality is not negotiable. The buses we build transport Australians every day, and we take great pride in delivering products that are safe, dependable and built to last.

Joining Custom Denning means becoming part of a business that is helping shape the future of clean, Australian-made transport.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We're looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our engineering team and support the design, development and continuous improvement of our bus and coach platforms. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys working close to the production floor, solving real manufacturing problems, and seeing their designs go from CAD to a finished vehicle. Experience in heavy vehicles, commercial vehicles, automotive or bus/coach manufacturing is highly regarded.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and systems for buses/coaches, from concept through to production release

Produce and review 3D CAD models, drawings and BOMs (SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo or similar)

Support the production line with engineering input — troubleshooting build issues, running root-cause analysis and implementing corrective actions

Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce build time, cost and rework across the manufacturing process

Conduct engineering analysis (structural, thermal, fatigue) to validate designs against ADR and relevant Australian Design Standards

Prepare and maintain technical documentation, work instructions and engineering change notices (ECNs)

Liaise with suppliers, fabricators and trades to source components and resolve manufacturing/fit-up issues

Support prototype builds, testing and validation of new models (including electric drivetrain integration)

Collaborate with electrical, production and quality teams to ensure designs are manufacturable and compliant

ABOUT YOU

You'll bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline)
  • 3–5 years' experience in a mechanical design/engineering role within manufacturing — heavy vehicle, automotive, bus/coach, truck body building, rail or agricultural equipment backgrounds highly regarded
  • Strong 3D CAD skills and confidence reading/producing technical drawings to Australian Standards
  • Practical, hands-on approach — comfortable on the production floor, not just at a desk
  • Understanding of sheet metal fabrication, welding, chassis/structural design or vehicle systems (highly regarded)
  • Familiarity with ADRs (Australian Design Rules) or willingness to learn
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset
  • Good communicator, able to work cross-functionally with production, quality and suppliers
  • WHAT WE OFFER
  • Competitive salary package reviewed annually.
  • A genuinely unique opportunity to work with Australia’s only local fully electric bus manufacturer.
  • Stable, full-time permanent role in a growing, future-focused business.
  • Supportive, down-to-earth team culture with a strong safety focus.
  • Exposure to cutting-edge electric vehicle manufacturing technology.
  • Modern Sydney-based production facility.
  • Opportunity to shape and mature the safety and quality framework within a growing Australian manufacturer.
  • * Direct access to senior leadership and genuine influence on business outcomes.
  • HOW TO APPLY
  • If you are passionate about quality and want to play a tangible role in Australia’s clean transport future, we would love to hear from you.
  • At Custom Denning, we are deeply committed to Reconciliation and encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to apply.
