Mechanical Engineer

About the role

Hardware at Halter is truly unique. We design and build devices that are fitted to an animal, and must remain operational 24/7 for 6-10 years out in the field. To achieve this, we iterate and improve our products continuously, so a mechanical role at Halter can be quite diverse. We own our designs right the way through, from sketching how a device might fit on an animal, to testing in the lab to see how it might break, to spending time on the production line finding ways to improve the product. We like to do things quickly, no matter which phase of the design we're in, which makes the role fast-paced and adaptive.

Key responsibilities

Rapid hands-on development delivering robust electro-mechanical products through to production

Time spent on the farm with farmers, ranchers and animals, with a strong focus on ergonomic design

Collaborating with external suppliers to optimise designs and streamline manufacturing processes

Designing and iterating parts and assemblies to make them easy to manufacture and easy to assemble

Designing, conducting and documenting high quality tests

Designing complex injection molded parts, specifically overmolding

Setting up contract manufacturers to produce high quality injection molded parts

Tool commissioning at contract manufacturers

Designing for and selecting processes for high volume manufacturing

Contributing to a high performance team and helping with whatever is required to make customers and animals happy

About you

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar field is highly desired

Professional experience ideally working on robust hardware

Capable with 3D CAD and 2D drafting, preferably using Solidworks or Onshape

Highly reliable device design experience

Experience developing robust products

Exposure to the full product life cycle

Understanding of the challenges of outdoor hardware

Experience with verification and validation

* Interested and available to travel for 10-20% of the year (negotiable)
