Job Description

Mechanical Service Technician

Christchurch | Workshop Based + Site Work & Travel

GTech designs, manufactures and services high-speed centrifuges used throughout the food, dairy, wastewater, energy and industrial sectors. We also provide precision engineering and maintenance services to a diverse range of industries, including power generation, marine and aerospace.

We're looking for an experienced Mechanical Service Technician to join our Christchurch Service team.

This is primarily a workshop-based role, not a traditional field service position. You'll be based at our Christchurch facility, carrying out mechanical overhauls, repairs and new machine assembly, with site work and travel throughout New Zealand as required.

It's a hands-on role with plenty of variety. You could be stripping and rebuilding a high-speed centrifuge in our workshop, assembling a new machine, diagnosing a mechanical issue, or travelling to a customer site for an installation, commissioning, planned overhaul or breakdown.

About the role

As part of our Service team, you will

  • Strip, inspect, repair and rebuild high-speed centrifuges and other industrial equipment in our Christchurch workshop.
  • Carry out mechanical fitting, assembly and overhaul work to a high standard.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and develop practical repair solutions.
  • Assemble new and refurbished machinery.
  • Attend customer sites for servicing, repairs, installations and commissioning as required.
  • Work alongside our machining, fabrication and engineering teams on complex repair and refurbishment work.
  • Work directly with customers when on site to provide practical technical support.
  • Participate in a shared after-hours call-out roster.
  • Travel throughout New Zealand when required, including occasional overnight stays.
  • The majority of your time will be based in our Christchurch workshop, with field work forming an important but smaller part of the role.

About you

We're looking for a practical, mechanically minded tradesperson who enjoys pulling machinery apart, understanding how it works and putting it back together properly.

You'll ideally have

A trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Fitting & Turning, Maintenance Engineering or a similar discipline.

Strong mechanical fitting, assembly and maintenance skills.

Experience working with industrial machinery or mechanical plant.

Good mechanical fault-finding and problem-solving ability.

The ability to work accurately with close tolerances and high-value components.

A practical, hands-on approach and pride in the quality of your work.

The ability to work independently as well as part of a close-knit team.

Good communication skills and the confidence to work directly with customers when required.

A full New Zealand driver's licence.

Experience with centrifuges isn't essential. We'll provide comprehensive product-specific training to the right person.

We'd be particularly interested in people with backgrounds in mechanical fitting, industrial maintenance, rotating equipment, pumps and compressors, process plant, food and dairy processing, power generation, marine engineering or heavy industrial machinery.

Why join GTech?

Competitive hourly rate based on skills and experience.

Paid overtime.

Paid travel and call-out allowances.

Predominantly workshop-based—you won't spend your working life living out of a vehicle.

Interesting mechanical overhaul and rebuild work rather than repetitive production.

Modern, well-equipped Christchurch workshop.

Access to in-house machining, fabrication and engineering capability.

Work on specialised, high-value industrial equipment.

Ongoing technical and product training.

A varied role combining workshop work with occasional field service and travel.

* Join an established New Zealand engineering company working with customers throughout New Zealand and overseas.

If you're an experienced fitter, maintenance engineer or mechanical tradesperson who enjoys building, repairing and overhauling machinery, but also likes the occasional opportunity to get out on site and see equipment operating in the real world, this could be an excellent fit.

Applicants must have the legal right to work in New Zealand.
