SETU Waterford is seeking a highly motivated, experienced and innovative Postdoctoral Researcher to join our multidisciplinary research team. The successful candidate will contribute to an applied research project focused on the development, characterisation and evaluation of natural-based biostimulants and bioactive compounds for sustainable agricultural and crop-production.
The BIOSHORE project aims to identify and develop natural-based compounds with potential to improve plant growth, crop productivity, nutrient-use efficiency, resilience to environmental stresses and overall crop quality, while supporting the transition towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices. The research will involve extraction, characterisation and evaluation of the natural products and bioactive compounds, followed by systematic laboratory controlled-environment, pot and field-based studies to assess their efficacy across a range of economically important crops and agricultural systems.
The successful candidate will be expected to design and implement pot and field-trials to evaluate the effects of selected natural-based biostimulant formulations on different crops and production systems. These may include vegetable crops such as tomatoes and potatoes, fruit crops such as apples and vines as well as grassland and other relevant agricultural crops. The research will contribute to understanding the mode of action of the biostimulants and practical applications both under controlled and real-world growing conditions.
The position requires strong expertise in experimental design, plant science/agronomy and the planning and implementation of replicated pot and field-trials, together with experience in extraction, preparation and characterisation of natural products or bioactive compounds. Experience with analytical techniques and instrumentation such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography and related analytical methods would be highly desirable. The candidate should have the ability to interpret analytical and biological datasets and establish relationships between compounds composition, application rates and plant responses.
