SFU Health & Counselling provides free, confidential, and time-limited medical and mental health services to currently enrolled SFU and FIC students across all three campuses (Burnaby, Vancouver, Surrey). Services include, in-person/virtual, individual and group counselling. Pre-booked appointments are also available with Mental Health Nurses, a registered nurse, and doctors.
**About the Role**
Within the scope of the BCCN&M certified practice regulations, the Registered Nurse works autonomously, as well as in collaboration, supporting Health & Counselling Services (HCS) colleagues, providing specialized high-quality direct patient care for SFU and FIC students and supportive resourcing to external departments. The role works as a resource person for colleagues, internal Student University groups and Student Services departments and connects with external groups or health care workers (FHA, Public Health, Specialists). The role provides urgent and emergent care when required. Direct medical service to staff is limited. Reproductive health education and care, administering injectable, supporting medical team are common day to day duties.
Independently provides high quality clinical nursing services to the University community. Performing specific technical procedures such as ECGs, glucometer testing, pregnancy testing, and treatment. Assisting in clinic medical procedures. Engaging in evidence based, trauma informed, gender affirming care. Assessing, testing, diagnosing, managing, and treating common sexually transmitted infections within scope of practice (including performing PAP/cervical screening). Administering injectables (testosterone, vitamin B12, Dep Provera, Tetanus and Diphtheria) per physician orders. Providing wound care – cleaning and simple and complex dressings, suture removal. Liaising with Public Health. Following the BCCN&M Bylaws and appropriate Decision Support Tools (DST), and IV insertion. Provides BCCNP&M certified practice in reproductive health services. Provides allergy shots and monitoring/triage. Ordering and maintaining medical supplies, medications, medical equipment and vaccines. Maintain stock in exam rooms
and shared spaces.
