Research Associate

Division of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences

School of Medicine

College of Biomedical and Life Sciences

We are looking for a postdoctoral Research Associate to join the SYLFAEN-PSY project in the Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics (CNGG), Cardiff University School of Medicine.

Measuring the symptoms of psychosis takes time that research studies and clinics rarely have, so most people with psychotic disorders are only ever partly assessed. SYLFAEN-PSY asks whether Large Language Models (LLMs) can infer those symptoms from data that studies already hold, accurately enough to stand alongside the rating instruments we use today. You can read more in our announcement of the project.

In this role, you will

  • Develop and validate LLM-based methods that extract and infer psychotic symptoms from multimodal research data, from clinical text to cognitive measures, neuroimaging-derived phenotypes and genomic information.
  • Benchmark what those models infer against gold-standard symptom-rating instruments, using deeply characterised cohorts with thousands of individuals and multiple instruments.
  • Work with our industry and healthcare partners to validate the system on external datasets, including NHS Wales records and a research network covering more than six million people.
  • Publish in international journals, present at conferences, and develop your own applications for research funding.
  • Supervise postgraduate research students and work with colleagues across the Schools of Medicine and Computational and Mathematical Sciences.

We’d like to hear from you if you

Hold a PhD in a relevant subject (or close to submission) or have equivalent experience from industry.

Have a track record in psychiatric or psychometric research.

Experience with using LLMs for data analysis, or natural language processing research, will be welcome but it’s not needed for application. This project pairs our mental health research team with AI specialists in the School of Computational and Mathematical Sciences, and we expect both sides to learn from each other.

The CNGG brings together clinical, genomic, statistical and bioinformatic expertise to work on psychiatric, neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. We take career development seriously, and the Centre has a strong record of helping people build expertise in the areas that interest them, secure funding, and advance to the next stage of their professional careers.

This post is based at the Hadyn Ellis Building, Cathays campus.

This role is eligible to be offered on a blended working basis, meaning that as well as spending time working on campus you can also choose to spend some time working from another location, e.g. your home. The University is committed to offering this flexibility, wherever the role and business need allows, supporting work-life balance.

Cardiff University offers many excellent benefits, including 45 days annual leave (incl bank holidays), local pension scheme, a cycle to work scheme and other travel initiatives, annual increments within the pay scale, and more. It is an exciting and vibrant place to work, with many different challenges and is a proud Living Wage supporter.

How we will support you in performing in this role –

There are some things that you must have before you can start this role (see ‘Essential Criteria’), but other things can be developed either through training, or just by general on-the-job experience. We want to support and develop you once you have started in the role using a combination of the following to get the best out of you:

1. Regular one-to-ones with your manager

2. An experienced and supportive team around you

3. Supporting you through job-relevant training and development that you may require

4. A mentoring scheme

For informal enquiries please contact Antonio Pardiñas ([email protected]). If you are unsure whether your experience fits, please get in touch anyway.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week), available from 1st December 2026 and fixed term until 30th November 2028.

Salary: £41,885 - £46,970 per annum (Grade 6). Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.

### Hysbyseb Swydd

Cydymaith Ymchwil

Yr Is-adran Meddygaeth Seicolegol a’r Niwrowyddorau Clinigol

Yr Ysgol Meddygaeth

Coleg y Gwyddorau Biofeddygol a Bywyd

Rydym yn dymuno penodi Cymrawd Ymchwil ôl-ddoethurol i ymuno â phrosiect SYLFAEN-PSY yng Nghanolfan Geneteg a Genomeg Niwroseiciatrig (CNGG), Ysgol Feddygaeth Prifysgol Caerdydd.

Mae mesur symptomau seicosis yn cymryd amser nad oes gan astudiaethau ymchwil a chlinigau'n aml, felly dim ond asesiad rhannol y bydd y rhan fwyaf o bobl ag anhwylderau seicotig yn ei gael. Mae SYLFAEN-PSY yn gofyn a all Modelau Iaith Mawr (LLMs) gasglu'r symptomau hynny o'r data sydd eisoes gan astudiaethau, yn ddigon cywir i sefyll ochr yn ochr â'r offerynnau graddio rydyn ni'n eu defnyddio heddiw. Gallwch ddarllen mwy yn y cyhoeddiad hwn am y prosiect.

Yn y rôl hon, byddwch yn

  • Datblygu a dilysu dulliau'n seiliedig ar LLM sy'n echdynnu ac yn casglu symptomau seicotig o ddata ymchwil amlfoddol, o destun clinigol i fesurau gwybyddol, ffenoteipiau'n deillio o niwroddelweddu a gwybodaeth enomig.
  • Meincnodi'r hyn y mae'r modelau hynny'n ei gasglu yn erbyn offerynnau graddio symptomau safon aur, gan ddefnyddio carfannau wedi'u nodweddu'n fanwl gyda miloedd o unigolion ac offerynnau lluosog.
  • Gweithio gyda'n partneriaid yn y diwydiant a gofal iechyd i ddilysu'r system ar setiau data allanol, gan gynnwys cofnodion GIG Cymru a rhwydwaith ymchwil sy'n cwmpasu dros chwe miliwn o bobl.
  • Cyhoeddi mewn cyfnodolion rhyngwladol, cyflwyno mewn cynadleddau, a datblygu eich ceisiadau eich hun am gyllid ymchwil.
  • Goruchwylio myfyrwyr ymchwil ôl-raddedig a gweithio gyda chydweithwyr ar draws yr Ysgolion Meddygaeth a'r Gwyddorau Cyfrifiadurol a Mathemategol.

Hoffem glywed gennych chi os yw’r canlynol yn berthnasol

Meddu ar PhD mewn pwnc perthnasol (neu’n agos at gyflwyno) neu brofiad cyfatebol mewn diwydiant.

Profiad blaenorol mewn ymchwil seiciatrig neu seicometrig.

Croesewir profiad o ddefnyddio LLMs ar gyfer dadansoddi data, neu ymchwil prosesu iaith naturiol, ond nid yw'n angenrheidiol ar gyfer y cais. Mae'r prosiect yn paru ein tîm ymchwil iechyd meddwl ag arbenigwyr AI yn Ysgol y Gwyddorau Cyfrifiadurol a Mathemategol, a disgwylir i'r ddwy ochr ddysgu oddi wrth ei gilydd.

Mae'r Ganolfan Geneteg a Genomeg Niwroseiciatrig yn dwyn ynghyd arbenigedd clinigol, genomig, ystadegol a biowybodeg i weithio ar anhwylderau seiciatrig, niwroddatblygiadol a niwroddirywiol. Mae datblygu gyrfaoedd yn bwysig i ni, ac mae gan y Ganolfan hanes cryf o helpu pobl i feithrin arbenigedd yn y meysydd sydd o ddiddordeb iddynt, sicrhau cyllid, a symud ymlaen i'r cam nesaf yn eu gyrfaoedd proffesiynol.

Lleoliad y swydd yw Adeilad Hadyn Ellis ar gampws Parc Cathays.

Mae’r swydd yn gymwys i’w chynnig ar sail gweithio cyfunol. Mae hynny’n golygu, yn ogystal â gweithio ar y campws, y cewch weithio o leoliad arall, e.e. eich cartref, rywfaint o’r amser. Mae’r Brifysgol wedi ymrwymo i gynnig yr hyblygrwydd hwn pan fo’r swydd ac anghenion y busnes yn caniatáu, a hynny er mwyn sicrhau cydbwysedd rhwng y gwaith a’ch bywyd personol.

Dyma le cyffrous a bywiog i weithio lle ceir llawer o heriau gwahanol ac rydym yn falch o gefnogi’r Cyflog Byw.

Sut y byddwn yn eich helpu i gyflawni’r rôl hon –

Mae’n rhaid i chi fodloni rhai gofynion cyn gallu dechrau’r swydd hon (gweler ‘Meini Prawf Hanfodol’), ond bydd modd sicrhau’r elfennau eraill drwy gael hyfforddiant neu brofiad cyffredinol yn y swydd. Ar ôl i chi ddechrau yn y swydd, rydym ni am eich cefnogi chi a’ch datblygu gan ddefnyddio cyfuniad o’r canlynol i wireddu eich llawn botensial:

1. Cyfarfodydd un i un rheolaidd gyda'ch rheolwr

2. Tîm profiadol a chefnogol o'ch cwmpas

3. Eich cefnogi drwy estyn cyfleoedd i chi hyfforddi a datblygu yn ôl yr angen mewn ffyrdd sy’n berthnasol i’r swydd

4. Cynllun mentora

Ar gyfer ymholiadau anffurfiol cysylltwch ag Antonio Pardiñas ([email protected]) Os ydych chi'n ansicr a yw eich profiad yn addas, cysylltwch beth bynnag.

Swydd lawn amser yw hon (35 awr yr wythnos), ar gael o 1 Rhagfyr 2026 am gyfnod penodol tan 30 Tachwedd, 2028.

Cyflog: £41,885 - £46,970 y flwyddyn (Gradd 6). Ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd, bydd unigolion fel arfer yn dechrau ar waelod y raddfa gyflog, ac eithrio o dan amgylchiadau eithriadol.

Mae Prifysgol Caerdydd wedi ymrwymo i gefnogi a hyrwyddo cydraddoldeb ac amrywiaeth a chreu gweithle cynhwysol. Rydym o’r farn bod modd gwneud hyn drwy ddenu, datblygu a chadw ystod amrywiol o bobl o lawer o gefndiroedd gwahanol. Felly, rydym yn croesawu ceisiadau gan bobl o bob rhan o’r gymuned, beth bynnag fo’u rhyw, eu hethnigrwydd, eu hanabledd, eu cyfeiriadedd rhywiol, eu hunaniaeth draws, statws eu perthynas, eu crefydd neu eu cred, eu cyfrifoldebau gofalu neu eu hoedran. Rydym yn croesawu ac yn annog ceisiadau yn arbennig gan y rhai o grwpiau nad ydynt wedi’u cynrychioli’n ddigonol o fewn gweithlu'r Brifysgol, fel y rhai sy'n uniaethu fel LGBT+, o gefndiroedd ethnig leiafrifol neu'r rhai ag anableddau. Caniateir i geisiadau gael eu cyflwyno yn Gymraeg, ac ni fydd cais a gyflwynir yn y Gymraeg yn cael ei drin yn llai ffafriol na chais a gyflwynir yn Saesneg.
