Maintenance Fitter - Permanent Shift
Job Description
Looking for a hands-on mechanical maintenance role where your fault-finding skills really matter?
Join Whakatāne Mill Limited, a large continuous-process manufacturing operation, as a Shift Fitter. You'll play a key role in responding to breakdowns, carrying out planned maintenance and keeping plant and equipment operating safely and reliably.
We offer a permanent 4-on/4-off shift roster, an advertised salary of $132,000–$140,861 + benefits, and the opportunity to apply your mechanical fitting expertise in a challenging industrial environment.
We're looking for an experienced mechanical tradesperson who can systematically diagnose faults, work independently when required, and contribute to safe and reliable plant performance.
You’ll need strong mechanical diagnostic and fault-finding skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues using site documentation and a structured approach to problem-solving. Working closely with the Shift E/I Technician and production crews, you’ll need to communicate clearly, make sound decisions and work confidently with limited supervision.
As the sole Fitter on night shifts and weekends, you’ll play an important role in responding to breakdowns, minimising production downtime and getting equipment back up and running safely and efficiently. You’ll also be responsible for completing planned maintenance activities to maintain equipment reliability and help prevent future breakdowns. A strong focus on safety and continuous improvement is essential.
The successful applicant will ideally have
• Trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering Fitting and Turning, or an equivalent mechanical trade.
• Experience in a continuous manufacturing or heavy industrial environment.
• Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic skills, with experience responding to breakdowns and carrying out preventative maintenance.
• Sound knowledge of mechanical equipment, including pumps, bearings, gearboxes, drives, hydraulics and pneumatics.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, equipment manuals and maintenance documentation.
• Proven ability to work autonomously, prioritise work and make sound decisions, particularly when working with limited maintenance support on night shifts and weekends.
• Strong commitment to safe work practices, plant reliability and continuous improvement.
• Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with Operations and other Maintenance team members.
• Experience using a computerised maintenance management system (SAP experience would be an advantage)
As a Shift Fitter you will be paid a salary range of between $132,000 - $140,861 p/a. The salary range is dependent on your qualification/s. You will also enjoy a Superannuation package through Superlife, including Superannuation Savings, Southern Cross Medical Insurance, Life Insurance, and Disability Income Protection Insurance, total worth 7.5% of your base salary. In addition, there are opportunities for additional paid overtime during shuts or projects.
The successful applicant is required to undergo a criminal history check, a pre-employment medical and drug test prior to commencing employment. Whakatane Mill is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer.
