At Vital, our network keeps New Zealand's emergency services and utilities running. We're looking for a hands-on Systems Engineer to improve, secure, integrate and document our OSS and BSS infrastructure, and to help shape what comes next.

Vital is now part of Tait New Zealand, so this is an exciting time to join. Alongside looking after Vital's systems, you'll work with Tait's ICT team to bring systems together and make better use of shared resources. We are looking for a hands on engineer who doesn’t care for silo’s and won’t be saying “That’s not my job”. One day you may be migrating domains and DNS into new virtual infrastructure, the next you may be building a laptop or helping a user with printing.

What you'll be doing

Contributing to IT strategic plans and helping set standards and best practice for Vital's network information systems

Overseeing the day-to-day running of our OSS and BSS infrastructure, across both cloud and on-premise platforms

Strengthening security and managing cybersecurity risks, including consolidating secure domains

Making sure replication and backups are working and well documented

Administering Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, file servers and related platforms

Managing virtual Linux operational deployments

Leading a steady, non-disruptive programme of improvements based on business need and best practice

Creating and maintaining clear documentation for existing and new technology

Managing ICT procurement and licensing

Supporting users with day-to-day requirements

Supporting the technical team through knowledge sharing and awareness of emerging tech, trends and security threats

Working with users on training and guidance, and spotting where more training is needed

Working closely with Taits Digital Information Services team to drive integration and collaboration across the two companies

What you'll bring

Solid experience with storage and backup, cloud services, Microsoft 365, server virtualisation, domain and security architecture, Linux server infrastructure, and firewall and VPN technologies

Strong problem-solving and lateral thinking, without losing sight of operational detail

Excellent documentation skills, for both new and legacy systems, including technical design and architecture artefacts

Commercial experience working with external providers

The ability to explain technology clearly in business language

A proactive, self-managing approach. You spot gaps, make a plan, get stuff done and report on progress

Strong relationship skills with colleagues, managers, suppliers and stakeholders

A calm, mature and adaptable approach. You enjoy variety, can handle the unexpected, and are comfortable in an agile environment where change is normal.

Curiosity and openness to new ideas, and a drive to promote innovation

Maturity when dealing with colleagues in high stress operational environments

The details

This role reports to the Head of Technology & Operations. It's office-based at our Tory Street, Wellington premises, with flexibility when needed. You'll work normal office hours, with some out-of-hours work as required.
