Teacher of Business
Job Description
Job Summary
Brighton College is seeking to appoint a full-time Teacher of Business on a permanent contract, to start in April 2027, or earlier if possible.
The Department
The Business Department is a thriving, ambitious and highly successful department within the College consisting of two experienced teachers. We are seeking an enthusiastic teacher to join a supportive and experienced team committed to academic excellence, intellectual curiosity and outstanding pupil outcomes. As a small but highly successful department, every member of the team plays a significant role in shaping the schemes of work, enrichment programme and wider academic experience of our pupils.
The department follows the AQA syllabus for A-Level, with the Upper Sixth following the legacy specification and Lower Sixth following the new specification launched this September.
Business attracts around 25-30 pupils in each Sixth Form year group, with outstanding outcomes. Over the last three years, pupils have achieved an average of 44% A\ and 96% A\-B with many of them progressing to study Business and related disciplines at leading universities including Bath, King’s College London and Durham.
Those taking the subject are immersed in the real world of business from the outset. Lessons are enriched through contemporary case studies, entrepreneurial success stories and engagement with industry professionals, ensuring pupils develop a deep understanding of how business theory operates in practice. Our pupils have had the opportunity to hear about the importance of building a brand from the brand team at a global company, the risks and opportunities that come with the growth of digital marketing and the operational challenges of developing a business into a multi-million-pound brand.
A variety of academic societies are offered by the department; Business Society gives pupils in Year 9 and 10 a forum for critically assessing contemporary business decision-making as well as giving them a chance to face entrepreneurial challenges. Young Enterprise is run by the current Head of Department as part of the Beyond Brighton curriculum, with pupils reaching regional finals on multiple occasions and receiving recognition for a number of highly successful and innovative companies.
Recent academic trips have included visits to Edinburgh, Bologna, London and the Midlands, exploring the operations and strategic decision-making of organisations including Jaguar Land Rover, Morgan Motor Company and Pagani.
Role Specification
The successful candidate will be an excellent teacher, or demonstrate clear potential to become one, with the ability to inspire pupils through engaging and intellectually challenging teaching. They will combine strong subject expertise with warmth, enthusiasm and ambition, fostering a genuine interest in business, entrepreneurship and contemporary economic issues.
The successful candidate will teach A-level Business and may also have the opportunity to contribute to the teaching of economics, depending on experience and departmental needs. They will share the department's commitment to academic excellence, delivering stimulating and ambitious lessons that inspire intellectual curiosity, foster independent thinking and discussion, and enable all pupils to make excellent progress. Beyond the classroom, the successful candidate will contribute to the rich co-curricular life of the department through activities such as Business Society, academic competitions, enterprise initiatives and educational visits. They will also support pupils in pursuing ambitious university and career aspirations, including applications to leading universities and degree apprenticeships.
This role presents an exciting opportunity to work within a high-performing department where academic achievement is matched by a strong commitment to enrichment and real-world engagement. Additionally, all teachers at Brighton College are expected to contribute to the school’s pastoral system, generally as a tutor in one of our 16 houses (of which six are boarding houses and ten are day).
There is also an expectation that all teachers will contribute to the cocurricular life of the school, through the extensive Games programme, and/or through the leadership of one of over 100 school societies.
Candidates are encouraged to point to interests and enthusiasms as part of their application. All staff have the opportunity to contribute to our Masterclass programme; this is a series of weekly lessons designed to celebrate the enjoyment of learning, focusing on an area of personal academic or cultural interest. These have included subjects such as Magical Realism, Cuisine and Culture and Great Debates in History.
All teachers joining Brighton will have the benefit of guidance by an experienced mentor, whose role it will be to provide support during their probationary period. Thereafter, all teachers are expected and supported to participate in continuous professional development, throughout their time at the College.
