About the role
The Telecommunications Rigger is responsible for the safe installation, maintenance, upgrade, testing, commissioning support and decommissioning of telecommunications infrastructure across New Zealand. The role involves working at heights on towers, monopoles, rooftops, water towers and other telecommunications structures while delivering work that meets client specifications, New Zealand legislation and Cal Tech's Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental Management Systems (70%). Further this role involves Civil works related to tower installation (30%). This is a full-time permanent position with a minimum guaranteed 30 hours of work per week. Employees will typically work approximately 40 hours per week, depending on operational requirements. The role is based in Christchurch; however, work will be carried out at client sites throughout New Zealand, and travel or temporary stays away from Christchurch may be required.
Key responsibilities
Install, upgrade and replace telecommunications equipment including LTE and 5G antennas, Massive MIMO antennas, panel and omni-directional antennas, Remote Radio Heads (RRHs), Baseband Units (BBUs), GPS antennas, microwave dishes, Tower Mounted Amplifiers (TMAs), surge protection devices, outdoor telecommunications cabinets, hybrid, coaxial and fibre optic cabling, DC power cables and earthing systems
Perform telecommunications rigging activities including tower climbing, rooftop access, monopole installations, gin wheel operations, rope and pulley systems, mechanical lifting operations, installation of mounting brackets, steelwork, equipment lifting and positioning, structural modifications, replacement of corroded hardware, installation of cable support systems, cable trays, ladders and safety systems
Carry out microwave installations including mounting microwave mounts, installing microwave dishes, Outdoor Units (ODUs), Indoor Units (IDUs), Ethernet and RF jumpers, complete fine alignment under engineering direction and assist with commissioning
Assist with mobile network upgrades including equipment replacement, new RRH installations, antenna swaps, fibre upgrades, DC power upgrades, equipment integration support, equipment removal and network modernisation projects
Install and manage fibre optic cables, fibre patch leads, fibre routing, fibre protection, cable management, labelling and fibre trays, and assist fibre technicians during splicing and testing where required
Support commissioning engineers by completing cable continuity checks, performing sweep testing, conducting Passive Intermodulation (PIM) testing, assisting with VSWR testing, checking RF jumper integrity, verifying fibre connections and reporting defects
Assist civil teams with installing equipment foundations, cabinet positioning, pole installations, earthing installations, duct installation, cable entry systems, fence installation, cable ladder installation and telecommunications shelter fit-out
Safely remove and dispose of antennas, RRHs, microwave dishes, cabinets, feeders, fibre cables, brackets, steelwork and cable trays, ensuring all removed assets are identified, documented and returned or disposed of according to client requirements
Work safely on telecommunications towers, monopoles, rooftops, water towers, guyed masts, steel structures and elevated work platforms (EWPs), always maintaining 100% fall protection and complying with Cal Tech rescue procedures
Comply with Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, Cal Tech Health & Safety Management System, client safety requirements, Permit to Work systems, Working at Heights procedures, rescue plans, Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), Job Safety Analyses (JSA), toolbox meetings, hazard identification and reporting, and incident reporting requirements
About you
Minimum two years' experience in telecommunications rigging, telecommunications infrastructure, or a closely related field (essential).
Ability to work safely at heights (essential)

Full New Zealand Class 1 Driver License
NZQF Level 3 qualification (or equivalent overseas qualification), or a minimum of two years' relevant telecommunications rigging experience.
