Job Description

The University of Tasmania acknowledges the Palawa/Pakana and Gadigal/Wangal people as the traditional custodians of the land, sea and waters of the areas upon which we live and work. We recognise their valuable contributions and deep connection to country and pay respect to Elders past and present.

About the Opportunity

The School of Law at the University of Tasmania is one of Australia’s oldest and most respected centres of legal education, with a proud history dating back to 1893. This is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished academic leader to shape the future of a distinguished law school that is committed to excellence in legal education, impactful research, and meaningful engagement with the legal profession and wider community.

As Dean and Head of School, you will provide strategic, academic, and operational leadership, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and high performance. You will lead the School’s contribution to the University’s strategic goals, strengthen partnerships across government, industry and the legal sector, and support the development of graduates equipped to make a positive impact in Tasmania, Australia and beyond. This role offers the opportunity to build on a strong legacy while guiding the School into its next chapter of growth and influence.

About the University

The University of Tasmania is a mission-driven institution dedicated to making a difference for Lutruwita/Tasmania and a distinctive contribution from Tasmania to the world. As the sole university on the island, the University is deeply embedded in the social, economic, and environmental fabric of Tasmania, working in close partnership with communities, industry, and government to address key challenges in education, health, productivity, and climate action. The University takes pride in its place-based identity, leveraging Tasmania’s unique geography, culture, and resources to offer world-leading research and education.

What We are Looking For

We are seeking an outstanding academic leader with a strong track record of achievement in legal education, research, and engagement. You will bring the vision to shape the future of legal education, the leadership capability to foster a high-performing and collaborative culture, and the strategic insight to navigate a rapidly evolving higher education environment. With experience leading academic excellence, research growth, and operational performance, you will be skilled at building meaningful partnerships across the legal profession, government, industry, and the community. A deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing legal education, together with a commitment to innovation, student success, and institutional impact, will position you to lead the School's next chapter with confidence and ambition.
