Draughtsperson
Job Description
About the Role
We're looking for an experienced Draughtsperson to join our growing Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) team in Tauranga.
This is much more than a drafting role. You'll be responsible for turning IFC Drawings, standards and project requirements into practical, buildable solutions for fabrication and installation across water, industrial and infrastructure projects.
You'll work closely with Project Engineers, the Workshop Manager, site teams and fabricators, supporting multiple projects at the same time. We're looking for someone who can confidently communicate using piping, fabrication and construction terminology, understands tie-ins and installation requirements, and can work with stakeholders across all stages of a project.
Success in this role requires excellent time management, strong attention to detail, and the ability to prioritise competing deadlines while maintaining high-quality outputs.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce accurate 3D models, fabrication drawings, shop drawings and installation documentation.
- Develop practical designs for piping systems, structural steel, mechanical equipment and fabricated assemblies.
- Work across multiple projects simultaneously, managing priorities and delivery deadlines effectively.
- Communicate with Project Engineers, Workshop Manager, site teams and other stakeholders to develop practical solutions.
- Apply engineering standards, specifications and client requirements to designs and quality documentation.
- Develop and maintain design checklists and supporting quality assurance documentation.
- Support tie-in design, brownfield modifications and constructability reviews.
- Work closely with workshop and site teams to ensure designs can be fabricated, installed and maintained efficiently.
- Contribute to standardisation, continuous improvement and future product development initiatives.
We're looking for someone with
- Proven experience in mechanical drafting, piping design or construction-related environments.
- Strong understanding of piping systems, fabrication, installation methodologies and tie-ins.
- Ability to confidently communicate using piping and construction terminology with engineers, workshop personnel and construction teams.
- Experience interpreting standards, specifications and client requirements and applying them to practical design solutions.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
- Experience developing quality documentation, drawing registers and design checklists.
- Sound understanding of Design for Manufacture, weld symbols, revision control and fabrication detailing.
- Experience with stainless steel and carbon steel fabrication.
- Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD or similar 3D CAD software.
Career Development & Future Opportunities
This role offers significant opportunities for growth as our M&E business continues to expand.
Beyond project work, there will be opportunities to become involved in the development of standardised products and solutions that support the wider construction industry, including:
- Containerised pump stations
- Water and wastewater treatment systems
- Modular mechanical infrastructure
- Temporary works steel support systems
- Other innovative products designed to improve safety, efficiency and quality outcomes across construction projects
For the right person, there is a pathway to become a technical leader within the team, helping mentor and develop junior CAD resources while focusing more of your time on design development, product innovation and technical solutions.
