Accredited employerTimaru, Canterbury, NZFull-timePosted 2 weeks ago

Job Description

ABOUT US

Paul Smith Earthmoving is a South Island civil earthmoving contractor with branches in Timaru, Christchurch, Greymouth and Central Otago. We deliver earthworks, roading and civil infrastructure projects, and we hold ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certification. Our people work with heavy plant in changing environments every day, so getting health, safety and environment right matters to us.

THE ROLE

We're looking for a Health, Safety & Environmental Advisor to join our team in Timaru. This role has two halves. You'll be out on-site building credibility with crews and our leaders, and you'll be back at our offices producing the high-quality documentation that keeps our projects, tenders and management system running.

Document creation is a core part of this job. You'll write and maintain site-specific safety plans, environmental management plans, JSEAs, procedures, forms, investigation reports, audit reports and client pre-qualification submissions. These go in front of clients, councils, auditors and regulators, so they need to be accurate, well structured and professionally presented.

Travel to our other branches and project sites is part of the job, including occasional overnight stays.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

Writing, formatting and maintaining controlled HSEQ documents, including plans, procedures, templates, registers and reports

Preparing site-specific safety and environmental management plans for new projects and tenders

Completing client pre-qualifications

Leading site audits and inspections, and writing clear, actionable reports

Supporting incident investigations and producing investigation reports

Delivering practical coaching, inductions, toolbox talks and training, including developing the training material

Supporting our ISO-certified management system, document control and external audits

Helping leaders identify and manage critical operational risks

Contributing to environmental compliance, including erosion and sediment control, consent conditions and spill response

ABOUT YOU

You might come from civil construction, quarrying, forestry, transport, manufacturing, utilities or a similar operational environment. You'll bring:

3+ years' experience in a Health & Safety or HSE Advisor role

Excellent Microsoft Office skills. In Word that means styles, templates, headers and footers, tables, tracked changes and long-document formatting. You'll also be confident with Excel registers and data, PowerPoint for training, and Outlook, Teams and SharePoint

A high standard of written English, with strong attention to detail and the ability to write clearly for different audiences

Experience working within a document control system

Strong working knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and associated regulations

Experience with audits, risk management and incident investigations (ICAM or similar is an advantage)

Confidence dealing with everyone from operators and subcontractors through to directors

A full NZ driver licence and willingness to travel

A relevant H&S qualification (NZ Diploma, NEBOSH or equivalent) is preferred

Experience with ISO 45001 and 14001, contractor management, tender submissions or environmental programmes will be viewed favourably.

WHAT'S ON OFFER

A varied role split between site and office, with genuine influence across the business

Autonomy and strong leadership support

Exposure to both safety and environmental programmes

A stable, well-established company with a solid forward workload

Competitive salary aligned with experience
