Senior Data Engineer
Job Description
About Us
We’re a New Zealand company helping governments around the world modernise their tax systems. Our clients span South America, the Caribbean, the Pacific, and Europe. We’re proud to contribute to public sector reform and align our technology with our clients’ visions. We’re a family-friendly workplace that celebrates diversity and encourages you to bring your whole self to work. Because our customers are located worldwide, we look for team players who are open to learning about different cultures and experiencing different approaches to work.
About the role
ADAPT is our analytics and risk intelligence product for revenue authorities. It's built to show tax officers where to focus. Its first module scores and segments taxpayers who owe, so collections teams can work the cases that matter most. Risk comes next, with revenue forecasting and fraud detection further out.
We're hiring a Senior Data Engineer to help build the data underneath it. You'll bring each government's data in, model it, test it and keep it trustworthy in production. Tax officers will rely on what it tells them, so every score has to trace back to the data behind it.
For now most of the work is the warehouse and the data our models use, and the modelling share grows over time. If you have data science skills, or want to grow them, you'll use them here. You don't need them to apply.
You might be a data engineer, with or without an interest in machine learning. Or you might be a data scientist who has built and run production pipelines and modelled data for other people to use. We don't expect both.
What you’ll do
Extending the ADAPT warehouse with the team, from raw ingestion to the datasets that reports and models read.
Bringing each jurisdiction's data in from its own systems and keeping every client's data separate.
Designing dimensional models and dbt layers, with data tests that catch problems before anyone downstream does.
Running pipelines in Airflow, with the monitoring and alerting to know when something breaks.
Preparing the data our models train and score on, watching it for drift, and helping make sure a model goes live only when the evidence supports it.
Leading the design and build of your work alongside a senior peer and helping less experienced engineers and interns grow.
What will you bring?
A production warehouse or data pipelines that other people relied on, which you designed, ran and can walk us through.
Strong SQL, and Python you've used to build and run pipelines.
Dimensional modelling, and transformation as tested code with dbt or similar.
Airflow, Azure Data Factory or a similar orchestrator, and running data in production: monitoring, alerting and fixing the cause when something breaks.
Experience setting the design for a significant data system, leading other engineers in building it, and bringing the people who use the data with you.
If you meet most of this and want to learn the rest, we'd like to hear from you. You don't need to know tax.
We use Python, dbt Core, dlt (dltHub), Airflow, PostgreSQL, MLflow and Evidently. Experience with any of them helps, and you can learn the rest here.
Depending on your background, you might also bring some of these. We don't expect anyone to bring all of them.
Data science or machine learning.
Model monitoring and explainability.
Responsible use of data and models in government, such as work under the Algorithm Charter.
Power BI or another BI tool.
Data from several clients on one platform, kept strictly separate.
* Knowledge of tax or debt collection.
