Job Description

At Trade Me, we're about connecting Kiwi to create the life they want. Whether it's the big things like finding a home, a job, a car or growing their business, or the smaller things, like finding that right bedside table or parting ways with some old stuff. At Trade Me our vision is to be the place where Kiwi look first.

You'll work with your squad, engineering and product teams to bring product enhancements and new products to life on our Comms Platform, delivering an experience to our customers that is second to none. In this 12-month fixed-term role, you'll bring engineering-for-scale experience, sound distributed systems judgement and technical leadership to systems that other teams rely on.

Here is what you can expect from this role:

Design, estimate and plan the work your squad needs to do, with technical ownership and accountability for projects

Write code and unit tests, then build, test, release and monitor what you ship to production

Mentor and coach junior members of the team

Peer review code and document your work as you go so others can maintain and build on it

Find and address challenges with our processes and practices, and apply new technologies to solve business problems

Get involved in initiatives to improve the Trade Me code base and technical design

What you will bring to our team:

5+ years in similar development roles, with a history of engineering for scale

Hands-on experience developing with AI tools, and a natural curiosity to weave them into your everyday work

Strong production experience with .NET (C#) and TypeScript/Angular

Production experience with SQL, Google Cloud Pub/Sub, Kafka or similar, and cloud with Terraform

Experience designing and running production systems with good alerting, and leading incidents

Experience running large data migrations or repairs safely, with dry runs, checks and rollback plans

A track record of shipping changes to systems other teams depend on, and managing the effect on those teams

Comfort working in legacy code or databases with little documentation, and documenting what you learn

Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical work across teams

Sound judgement on distributed systems (eventual consistency, back-pressure, capacity and cost), making design decisions based on cost, capacity and simplicity

* Clear communication of technical concepts, strong collaboration and critical thinking, openness to ideas and the ability to adapt your approach to the situation

You'll have the best time working at Trade Me, and this is why:
