Job Description

Who we are

We own and operate the electricity distribution network that provides South Cantabrians with power. We are proud to be community-owned and connect over 34,000 customers throughout the region.

At Alpine Energy, our people sit at the centre of everything we do. Our Culture Commitment guides how we work together so every person feels safe, optimistic, energised, involved, and appreciated. We empower each other with trust and respect, take ownership of our words and actions, and act with integrity. By living these behaviours every day, we stay connected as one team and create a workplace where everyone can thrive.

We are considered an essential lifeline service, playing a significant role in our community, contributing to the growth and prosperity of South Canterbury and New Zealand’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

We are in a period of substantial investment and with that comes exciting career opportunities for the right candidates to join our high performing team.

The role

Join us at Alpine Energy in Timaru as a Supply Electrician and help keep South Canterbury connected.

Working directly for the network owner, you’ll work across zone substations, pole-mounted substations, ring main units, transformers, earth systems, distribution cabinets and associated network assets. The role combines practical electrical work with inspection, testing, maintenance and asset condition assessment.

This is a permanent role based in Timaru and an opportunity to bring your experience to a community-owned network where you can continue developing your skills and see the impact of your work across the communities we serve. Relocation and short term accommodation support is available for a successful candidate relocating.

As a Supply Electrician in our Technical Services team, you will:

Install, inspect, test, maintain, repair and replace electrical plant and network equipment

Complete inspections, testing and condition assessments across substations, transformers and associated distribution assets

Support fault investigations, commissioning, planned maintenance, outages and capital works across the network

What you’ll need

New Zealand Electrician registration with a current practising licence and a current Class 1 driver’s licence

1-2 years’ experience in electricity supply, electrical distribution or a related industry

Strong problem-solving and fault-finding skills with a genuine commitment to safety, quality and continuous improvement

Nice to haves

A Class 2 driver’s licence and/or current First Aid certificate

Electrical distribution network or utility industry training and qualifications

* Experience with network asset inspections, testing, condition assessments, substations or transformers

Making the move to Timaru

Relocating is a significant decision, so the opportunity needs to fit both your career and personal goals.

Working directly for the network owner you'll see the impact of your work across the communities we serve. You’ll join a team with a strong focus on safety, practical development and supporting each other to deliver reliable electricity for South Canterbury.

Timaru offers an alternative to big-city living without asking you to take a step back in your career. With shorter commutes, the coast and mountains nearby, and more room for life outside of work, South Canterbury gives you the opportunity to build your career while making the most of your time away from it.

It’s what we mean by Alpine, where work meets lifestyle.

What we offer

At Alpine we focus on creating a place where people genuinely want to come to work.

This shows up in the day-to-day. It’s practical wellbeing support that works for you, flexibility where it makes sense, and recognition that feels real. From an annual wellbeing allowance to medical insurance, on-site health support, and regular social events, our benefits are designed with you in mind; focused on making a real difference.

Our Timaru office helps too. With panoramic views, great coffee, fresh fruit, and spaces designed for both focus and connection, it’s an environment that supports how you work best.

You’ll also experience a strong health and safety culture, ongoing development opportunities, and a team that takes pride in supporting each other and the wider community.

If you’re curious about everything we offer, we’re always happy to talk through it during the recruitment process
