Job Description

Port of Tauranga is New Zealand’s largest port and international freight gateway. Our Container Terminal at Sulphur Point operates a 24-hour, seven-day service supporting ship planning, ship operations, marshalling, on-board stevedoring and reefer services.

We are seeking an experienced and customer-focused Customer & Cargo Logistics Supervisor to lead our Customer Cargo Logistics team.

About the role

This is a hands-on leadership position supervising a team of six Customer Cargo and Logistics Coordinators.

Alongside overseeing the team's day-to-day customer and cargo logistics activities, you will be responsible for coordinating rosters and leave, managing and developing staff, supporting training and continuous improvement, and building strong working relationships with customers and other stakeholders.

The role requires someone who can balance the demands of a busy operational environment with a genuine focus on their people. You'll lead a small, friendly team while maintaining the high standards of customer service, accuracy and regulatory compliance that are critical to our container terminal operation.

Key responsibilities

Lead and support a team of six Customer Cargo & Logistics Coordinators.

Manage the team roster, leave and day-to-day workload to maintain appropriate coverage and service levels.

Coach, train and develop team members while supporting a positive, collaborative and accountable team culture.

Drive continuous improvement across team processes, systems and ways of working.

Reconcile cargo information and maintain a high standard of data accuracy within our Terminal Operating System (TOS).

Ensure processes and procedures meet Customs, MPI and other regulatory requirements.

Manage customer enquiries, issues and requests professionally and efficiently.

Develop and maintain productive relationships with shipping lines, customers, regulatory agencies and other internal and external stakeholders.

Meet with customers and stakeholders as required to resolve issues and identify opportunities to improve service delivery.

Contribute to a safe, efficient and customer-focused operating environment.

What you'll bring

This position requires someone with strong logistics knowledge who is equally comfortable dealing with customers, solving problems and leading people.

Essential for the role:

Sound working knowledge of New Zealand Customs requirements, MPI requirements and shipping-line processes.

Strong customer focus and the ability to develop effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.

Excellent attention to detail and a strong appreciation of the importance of accurate cargo information.

The ability to lead, motivate and develop a small, friendly team.

Strong organisational and time-management skills.

Confidence working to deadlines and resolving operational issues in a busy environment.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Excel.

* A commitment to safety and continuous improvement.

Previous experience in a port industry administrative role would be an advantage. We would also welcome applications from people with a freight forwarding, shipping-line or similar logistics background who have the required Customs, MPI and shipping knowledge and are ready to take the next step into a leadership position.

Previous supervisory experience would be beneficial, although we are equally interested in applicants who can demonstrate strong leadership potential and relevant industry knowledge.

Port of Tauranga is a drug and alcohol-free workplace. The successful applicant will be required to pass a drug and alcohol test and background checks.

As the Container Terminal operates 24/7, there may occasionally be a need to deal with operational matters or phone calls outside of normal business hours, including evenings and weekends. Flexibility is therefore an important part of the role.

If you're an experienced shipping, port, freight forwarding or logistics professional who enjoys working with customers and is ready to lead and develop a great team, we'd like to hear from you.

Applications close Wednesday 4 November.
