Job Description

Join Our Millari NZ Whānau

Millari NZ Ltd is a growing timber and LVL manufacturer based in Gisborne, New Zealand, with operations across Aotearoa and Australia.

We are looking for a practical, proactive and hands-on Health & Safety Coordinator to strengthen our health and safety systems, support our people and drive continuous improvement across our manufacturing operations.

This is not just a desk-based role. We need someone who enjoys being on the production floor, engaging with teams, identifying risks and turning safety requirements into practical actions.

About the Role

Reporting to the Executive General Manager, you will work closely with GM - Site Operations, Operations, Production, Maintenance, HR and Shift Supervisors to support a safe, compliant and productive workplace.

You will play a key role in building a strong safety culture, developing our Health & Safety Representative team and ensuring safety initiatives, reporting and corrective actions are consistently followed through.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular site safety inspections, identify hazards and ensure corrective actions are completed.
  • Build, coordinate and support an effective Health & Safety Representative team across departments and shifts.
  • Organise and facilitate regular H&S meetings, prepare agendas, record minutes and track agreed actions.
  • Develop, monitor and report on H&S KPIs, including incidents, near misses, inspections, training, compliance and corrective actions.
  • Support incident investigations, risk assessments and preventative measures.
  • Monitor PPE compliance, machinery safety and safe operating procedures.
  • Coordinate staff and contractor inductions, training, toolbox talks and safety communications.
  • Work alongside HR, management and external providers to support ACC, rehabilitation and safe return-to-work (RTW) plans.
  • Maintain accurate H&S registers, policies, procedures, training records and compliance documentation.
  • Support emergency preparedness, safety audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively across all departments and shifts to ensure consistent safety standards and accountability.
  • Provide regular reporting, recommendations and progress updates to management.

About You

We are looking for someone who can confidently engage with people, take ownership and turn health and safety requirements into practical, measurable improvements.

Ideally, you will bring

  • Experience in health and safety within manufacturing, sawmilling, engineering or another industrial environment.
  • Sound understanding of New Zealand workplace health and safety legislation.
  • Experience coordinating H&S committees, safety representatives or employee engagement initiatives.
  • Strong organisational skills, including meeting facilitation, minute-taking, reporting and action tracking.
  • Ability to develop, monitor and maintain H&S KPIs and performance reporting.
  • Experience supporting ACC, injury management and return-to-work processes.
  • Practical knowledge of hazard identification, risk assessments and incident investigations.
  • Confidence engaging with employees, supervisors, contractors and senior management.
  • Strong computer skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • A proactive, hands-on and solutions-focused approach.
  • Relevant H&S qualifications would be advantageous.
  • Experience in timber manufacturing or sawmilling would be beneficial but is not essential.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary, depending on experience.
  • Full-time, permanent employment.
  • A varied, hands-on role across a busy industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Opportunity to build and strengthen our H&S systems, representative team and safety culture.
  • Professional development and opportunities to make a meaningful impact.
