Applications are invited to the above role to support the operation of the School of Life Sciences Imaging Facility (SLIM). SLIM provides sample preparation and histology services, advanced light microscopy, image analysis, and technical expertise to researchers and students across the University of Nottingham, as well as external academic and commercial users. Based across the Medical School (Queen’s Medical Centre) and the Biodiscovery Institute on University Park Campus, the person appointed will provide technical and administrative support to enable researchers and students to access imaging equipment and facilities safely and effectively.
The role will involve delivering routine training to users on microscopy systems, providing first- line technical support, maintaining microscopes and laboratory workspaces, and assisting with the day-to-day operation of the facility. The post holder will support researchers, postgraduate students and other facility users to carry out imaging experiments in a safe and efficient manner, following established procedures and health and safety guidelines. Appropriate continued development and training will be available, some of which will be mandatory and must be successfully completed.
We are seeking candidates with previous experience working in a laboratory or technical support environment, ideally with experience of light microscopy or other imaging equipment.
Candidates must demonstrate strong customer relation skills, the ability to work accurately to maintain high standards, and the ability to work effectively in a busy research environment. Candidates with experience supporting research laboratories, training users on technical equipment (particularly light microscopy systems), or working in a shared research facility would be desirable. Experience with microscopy acquisition or image analysis software (e.g. Zeiss ZEN, Nikon NIS-Elements, FIJI/ImageJ) would also be advantageous.
Please note that this role requires the ability to lift and move objects up to 15kg, this role will involve storing and moving consumables and equipment. Reasonable adjustments can be made if necessary.
Candidates must hold a HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant scientific discipline, plus relevant technical work experience, or substantial relevant technical work experience in a laboratory environment.
This full-time (36.25 hours weekly) fixed-term post is available from 1st June 2026 and is for a period of 15 months.
